  • Stradun, Placa The main cobblestone paved street of the city, this is where all the action is.
  • City Walls Dubrovnik is completely surrounded with walls and forts, don’t forget the Old Port.
  • Mount Srd The highest point above Dubrovnik, with absolutely stunning views, take the cable car up to this point
  • The Franciscan Monastery, Old Town Inside is the Pharmacy dating from the 14th century (the oldest in Europe)
  • Visit the Dubrovnik 5D Theatrum at St Claire’s Convent. The show only lasts a little over half an hour but will give you an amazing insight into the city and its history.

Favourite place or area to stay in Dubrovnik

  • I always try and stay in a private apartment in the old town owned by a local family as this gives you the real taste of this city.
  • Hotel Excelsior, which is just outside the Old Town to the south, has views back towards the Old Town which are simply spectacular

Best place to eat in Dubrovnik

  • For something very special the Sunset Lounge at the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace.
  • Konoba Pupo only seats about 15-20 so you may have to wait for a table but the food is traditional home cooked recipes
  • Dolce Vita in the Old Town has the best crepes

Best way to get around Dubrovnik

  • Walking, as there is no traffic in the old city and the rest of Dubrovnik can be easily discovered with local buses
  • Local fisherman’s boat, will take up to 3 persons. Take a trip to the close islands (Lokrum, Lopud, Kalamota) and go swimming, sunbathing, or fishing on the boat as well.

Local specialities to buy

  • Specialist brandies
  • Rozata, custard pudding similar to a crème caramel but with local liquor
  • Dubrovnik is the home of the neck-tie – even if you don’t wear them you just have to buy one from the old tie store in town.

Best way to spend a lazy Sunday in Dubrovnik

Sipping coffee and watching the world go by in the old town, perhaps a stroll along the beach, or a visit to Korcula or the local Elaphiti Islands.
